Membership and Recruitment
The Membership and Recruitment Task Force Chair for the U.S. Health Literacy Association oversees strategies to attract, engage, and retain members, ensuring a strong and diverse membership base. This role involves developing recruitment initiatives, fostering member engagement, developing member benefits, collaborating with stakeholders to enhance the value of membership, and maintaining member databases. The chair provides leadership to the task force, ensuring alignment with organizational goals and promoting a welcoming and inclusive member experience.

Dr. Melanie Stone is an innovative health literacy leader with over 15 years of experience advancing health literacy, capacity building, and community-engaged strategies in clinical, academic, and public health settings. She has a proven record of designing and implementing initiatives that enhance communication, improve patient outcomes, and influence organizational policy.
She is an Assistant Professor of Family & Community Medicine at UT San Antonio, the Director of Community Engaged Learning (CEL) at the Cheever Center for Medical Humanities & Ethics and Co-Director of Health Confianza, a community health literacy program in Bexar County. She serves on the governing council and is chair of the Policy & Advocacy Committee of the Texas Public Health Association, is co-Collection Editor for the AAMC MEdEdPORTAL’s community engagement collection, and serves on the International Health Literacy Association’s Standing Committee of Practice Standards.
An accomplished researcher, educator, and national presenter, Dr. Stone is recognized for developing scalable programs and pioneering health literacy change.
